Toddler regains hearing ability after bilateral cochlear implantation
A successful bilateral cochlear implantation at Max Hospital, Mohali, helped a one-year-and-nine-month old baby boy regain his hearing ability.
In a press release, Dr Naresh Kumar Panda, director, ENT, who led the case, said they decided to go ahead with a brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) test that revealed bilateral profound hearing loss. He added: “Bilateral cochlear implantation is not so common and needs a lot of precision. Both implants need to be inserted within four-five hours of duration as prolonging the general anaesthesia time in such a small child can have detrimental effects.
The baby is now under rehabilitation and is responding well to various sounds.
