Traffic comes to halt at Zirakpur

From 12 noon to 3 pm the ‘chakka jam’ call given by various farmers’ unions in protest against the three agriculture laws brought the traffic to a complete halt all over Mohali district.

All major intersections on highways and lights points were taken over by protesters severing the connectivity for more than three hours. It was an eerie sight with largely empty roads and massive traffic jams at various places on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway.

Protesters blocked the road under the Zirakpur flyover, McDonald light point and Singhpura Xhowk in the Zirakpur area. The UT Police put up barricades at the Chandigarh-Zirakpur entry point and fortified it with police personnel to prevent any untoward incident.

Around 2 pm, long queue of vehicles stranded in traffic jam running into kilometers were witnessed on the Dera Bassi-Zirakpur road. Commuters were stranded at bus stops. Protesters, waving yellow flags, blocked the highway by parking their tractors and private vehicles on the road. DSP (Traffic) Guriqbal Singh said, “The protesters blocked all major highways and intersections, but situation remained peaceful.”
