Garbage and foul smells greet tourists at the ‘Gateway to Punjab’ these days. The Landran-Kharar National Highway near Kailon village is littered with trash at several places, with the foul smell making it difficult to cross this stretch. Commuters said the NHAI, MC, and GMADA officials have not taken any action over this problem.

It has been almost a month since the garbage is littered alongside the road near housing societies and village areas; however, the recent rain spells have made matters worse with the threat of diseases growing every day.

Local residents expressed ignorance about who dumps garbage on the road; however, it is an open secret that there are no dustbins in the area and there is no designated place to collect and dispose of garbage in the city.

Jaswinder Gill, a resident of Kailon, said, “Most of the nearby housing societies, or RWA, have hired private contractors who collect garbage from here and take it away. We do not know exactly where they dump it. The sanitation situation in the villages here is a mess.”
