Chandigarh, July 10
To inculcate the need of growing trees and nurturing them among the public, the UT Forest Department observed Vanamahotsava, which is celebrated every year in the month of July.
Due to the Covid pandemic in the country, no major ceremonial plantation was done to avoid crowding. However, to sensitise the citizens to the importance of tree plantation, Vanamahotsava-2020 was launched by planting saplings in the forest area on the IT Park road between the Railway light point and the Kishangarh village chowk in association with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Chandigarh.
Debendra Dalai, Chief Conservator of Forests, UT, in the presence of Randeep Sharma, Commandant, CRPF, and Dr Abdul Qayum, DCF, and personnel of the CRPF and the Forest Department, planted forestry saplings. Debendra also flagged off a vehicle designed for distribution of saplings free of cost by the Forest Department titled “Forest Department at your doorsteps” during the monsoon season.
Three vehicles are designed for free distribution of saplings. The timings for the distribution of plants/saplings door-to-door by the Forest Department are from July 10 to 31 from 9 am to 6 pm. One can get up to five plants from the department of his/her choice of species without any charges through this vehicle. The initiative has been taken to encourage people to plant more plants. The schedule of movement of the Van is available at http://chandigarhforest.gov.in.
