Chandigarh, February 12

Strong tremors were felt in the city and the surrounding areas for several seconds at 10.31 pm tonight, prompting people to rush out of their houses.

The epicentre of the earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, was at a depth of 74 km in Tajikistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

However, there was no immediate report of any damage to life or property.

“We were watching televison after having dinner when all of a sudden, the windows started rattling,” said a resident of Sector 29.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
