The two-day training of district/charge level officers for houselisting and housing census and National Population Register (NPR) updation got under way at the District Administrative Complex, Sector 76, here today.

It is to be noted that the census process would be conducted in Punjab from May 15 to June 29 this year while in the next year, it would be conducted from February 9 to 28.

While launching the training session, Mohali Additional Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the census was a valuable benchmark for planning and formulation of policies for developmental purposes.

She added that it must be ensured that no household or individual would be left behind in the exercise as it provided data down to the village level which formed the core for determining literacy rate, mother tongue, educational levels, standard of living at grassroots level and also health surveys to provide adequate healthcare facilities to the people.

The Deputy Commissioner also exhorted the trainee officers to update themselves regarding the new methodologies being adopted in census, apart from advocating popularisation of the exercise through print, electronic, social media to raise awareness on the issue.

She added that nearly 74,000 enumerators and supervisors would be deployed in Punjab for the census and there would be separate register for rural and urban regions.

The other dignitaries present on the occasion included Assistant Commissioner General Yashpal Sharma, Assistant Commissioner Grievances Pooja Grewal.
