The Chandigarh police have booked unknown persons for purportedly issuing fake promotion orders of some Punjab Police cops.

Sources said before the code of conduct was announced in Punjab, promotion orders of police personnel were issued, which were later found to be not genuine.

While police officials refused to divulge the details, sources said the matter came to light when the department discovered that the signatures of a senior officer on the order were forged.

Since the Punjab Police Headquarters is in Sector 9, Chandigarh, the matter was reported to the UT police.

UT SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal said a complaint was received on January 11, following which an investigation had been initiated. “We will scrutinise the relevant record to find the truth,” the SSP said.

Meanwhile, a case under Sections 419, 420, 464, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Sector 3 police station today.
