Veterans of 4 Rajput commemorate Zojila Battle Honour Day

Veterans of the 4th Battalion of Rajput Regiment, christened “Fighting Fourth”, went down the memory lane when they congregated today in Mohali to commemorate the unit’s Zojila Battle Honour Day. Among them were veterans of the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars.

Recounting the history of the battalion, Col Ranbir Singh, a recipient of the Vir Chakra in 1971, said that the unit had participated in both World Wars and carried out 22 overseas campaigns from 1845 to 1946. Post-Independence, the unit fought in the 1948 J&K operations, 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, Gaza Strip 1960-61, Goa Liberation 1961 and IPKF operations in Sri Lanka in 1988-90.

Among the war veterans who attended the event were Maj-Gen Nanjappa, who had fought on the eastern front during the 1971 war, Col DS Rajput, who was decorated with the Vir Chakra for a raid on an enemy gun position, Capt VK Agarwal, who was wounded in the Kargil sector during the 1965 war, and Hony Capt Ram Singh, who was awarded a Sena Medal for his actions in the war. The battalion’s current Commanding Officer Col Sandeep Singh was also present along with personnel from the unit.
