Chandigarh: A 60-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Sector 20 on Friday. She has been identified as Vijay Lakshmi. The police were informed and the victim was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Sources said the victim left a suicide note in which she claimed that she was depressed. TNS

Biker snatches Mobile phone

Chandigarh: A motorcycle-borne miscreant allegedly snatched a mobile phone from a Maloya resident on Thursday night. The victim, Mohan, was returning home when he was targeted near the grain market in Sector 39. TNS

Cars vandalised, case registered

Chandigarh: Unknown persons have been booked for vandalising four cars parked in Sector 61 on August 5. According to the police, the complainant, Mukesh Ghai of Sector 61, reported that four miscreants smashed the windowpanes of his i20 car parked near his house. The suspects also vandalised three other cars parked there. The incident was caught on CCTV cameras installed in the area. The footage shows the miscreants with faces covered. TNS

43 booked for Attack on squad

Panchkula: A demolition squad was allegedly attacked by a mob while clearing encroachment on the panchayat land at Rattewali village in Barwala. A case was registered against 43 persons on the complainant of the BDPO, Vikas. In the FIR, Vikas stated that Sant Ram encroached upon the panchayat land. When a team reached the spot to clear encroachment, two suspects Jaspal and Dharampal incited villagers to teach officials a lesson, who attacked the encroachment team with bricks and stones. All suspects were identified by village sarpanch Roki Ram through CCTV camera footages. TNS

Woman: cops uncooperative

Panchkula: Deepa from Kundi village in Sector 20, whose husband Devender Negi died after being hit by a car near Sector 14 on July 27 morning, has submitted a complaint with the DCP, Mohit Handa, alleging non-cooperation by the Sector 14 police personnel. Deepa said Negi was taken to the Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the GMCH-32 after the accident. Later, Negi was shifted to the PGI, where he died. Deepa also expressed her reservation on the police investigation into her husband’s case. TNS

Man booked for fake profile

Chandigarh: An unknown person has been booked by the Chandigarh Police for creating a girl’s fake Instagram account. The complainant alleged that unknown person created a fake Instagram account using her credentials and uploaded objectionable posts in November 2019, said the police. The matter was probed by the cyber crime investigation cell following which a case was registered. TNS

‘Lockdown’ released

Panchkula: A book titled “Lockdown”, penned by Hindi novelist Dr Ajay Sharma, was released by the director, Haryana Sahitya Akademi, Dr Chandra Trikha, here today. Satirist Prem Vij and budding English novelist Parul Sharma were also present on the occasion. Dr Sharma has authored 18 books. TNS

Online dance contest at PU

Chandigarh: An online dance competition was organised for girl students of Panjab University. Mridula Mahajan (law) was the winner, Shreya Shree (geology) was second, Kritika Lakhotia (physics) third and Kiranpreet Kaur (evening studies) bagged the fourth position. The judges of the competition included Jatinder Arora Nayyar and Tarun Rawat. Jatinder is a trained kathak dancer and has performed at various national-level festivals. Rawat has judged various dance competitions and has also worked with Remo D’suza in the film ‘Street Dancer 3D’. TNS

e-course on online teaching

Chandigarh: A survey was conducted by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Dev Samaj College, regarding online teaching. The survey revealed that out of 82.1 per cent respondents with no experience in online teaching, 90.2 per cent teachers said they were taking online classes for the first time and 9.8 per cent teachers mentioned that they were not taking online classes. The college has developed an online MOOC course on ‘Learning to teach online’ for prospective and in-service teachers. As many as 700 candidates from various states have already taken the course.
