Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), organised a workshop on “Drug discovery and development in mew Millennium- 4” (D3NM-4) based on the theme “Interfacing with emerging neuroprotective strategies and neuropharmacological techniques” which concluded here today.

More than 70 participants from institutes/colleges of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana attended the workshop. In the inaugural session, Prof Shyam S Sharma, head of the department and Chairperson, D3NM-4, welcomed the participants and apprised them about the genesis of the workshop.

In the inaugural address, Prof Dulal Panda, Director, NIPER, Mohali, emphasised on the need of discovery of drugs for CNS disorders. Prof Anil Gulati, founder and CEO, Pharmazz, Inc, USA, delivered keynote address on “Discovery and development of sovateltide to treat cerebral stroke patients”. Dr Gulati discussed the preclinical and clinical studies on sovateltide, an endothelin B receptor agonist and neural progenitor therapeutics.

On the occasion, the Director also felicitated department faculty for their significant achievements. Dr Ashutosh Kumar, organising secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

In the scientific session, speakers Prof Bikash Medhi, PGIMER, Chandigarh; Prof Rajat Sandhir, Panjab University; Dr Jiban Jyoti Panda, INST, Mohali; Dr Ashok K Datusalia, NIPER, Rae Bareli; Dr Mahendra Bishnoi, NABI, Mohali; and Dr Ashok Jangra, Central University of Haryana, delivered lectures and interacted with the participants.

In the workshop, demonstrations of Hargreaves plantar and nerve conduction velocity was also held.
