World Water Day: Residents told to check wastage

On the occasion of World Water Day, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has reinforced its commitment to water conservation and urged residents to take responsible steps to prevent water wastage.

Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla emphasised the need for public cooperation, stating that, “Water is a precious resource. We must save it today to secure the future of our children. Every drop counts.” Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar said, “Our city is facing increased water demand. It is crucial to stop wastage and adopt sustainable water habits. Let’s work together to protect our water sources.”

To tackle water wastage, the MC will take strict action against violators and heavy fines will now be imposed for watering gardens/lawns during water supply hours, washing vehicles and courtyards using fresh drinking water, overflow from water tanks due to negligence, leaks in water pipelines and meter chambers and illegal use of booster pumps on water supply lines.

Repeat offenders may face water supply disconnection without prior notice. A fine will be imposed and collected through regular water bills.

The MC has appealed to all residents to fix leaking taps and pipelines immediately, use buckets instead of hoses for washing cars, water plants in the evening or early morning to reduce evaporation and avoid using drinking water for non-essential purposes.
