The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana for three days, beginning Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chandigarh received 41.4-mm and Mohali 31-mm downpour during the past 24 hours, which left the low-lying areas, major roads and junctions waterlogged, much to the inconvenience of the local residents.
Chandigarh recorded the third highest rainfall in the region after the highest of 69.5-mm downpour at Pathankot in Punjab, followed by 55.6-mm at Karnal in Haryana.
As the day remained almost dry, the mercury shot up compared to yesterday. The night temperature fell slightly. The relative humidity remained as high as 91% in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Chandigarh recorded 31.8 degree Celsius of maximum temperature, which was 1.4 above and 1.7 degree below normal. The minimum temperature of 24.3 degree Celsius remained 2.2 degree below yesterday’s reading.
Even as Panchkula experienced the lowest rainfall, it remained the least hot place in the tricity with 30.5 and 24.5 degree Celsius maximum and minimum temperature, respectively. Panchkula, along with Gurugram, recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Haryana.
Mohali logged 30.8 and 24 degree Celsius maximum and minimum temperature, respectively.
The weatherman has predicted partly and generally cloudy sky with thunderstorm and rain in the tricity region for the next five days. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 30 and 26 degree Celsius.
“As compared to yesterday, there was a fall of 0.6 and 0.1 degree in the average maximum temperature, which was appreciably below normal by 3.5 degrees and near normal in Punjab and Haryana, respectively, on Tuesday,” the IMD said.
