A foreign student at the Chandigarh University allegedly murdered his batchmate from Tanzania before hanging himself to death in a police lockup.

According to information, Tanzanian student Nuru Mari was first allegedly murdered by his batchmate.

When the murder accused, Saviour Chikopela (24) of Zambia, was arrested, he reportedly hanged himself to death in the lockup of Sunny Enclave police post at Kharar on Wednesday, said officials.

Saviour reportedly died in the lockup by hanging himself using thin nylon rope with lockup bar, said officials. The police rushed him to the Kharar Civil Hospital around 12.10 am where he was declared brought dead.

The police have remained tightlipped on the incident and even kept the gates of the police post closed on Thursday morning.
