Solan, January 16

Sirmaur DC Dr RK Pruthi today launched cow dung log machine in Mata Balasundari Gaushala and Jaivik Prashikshan Kendra.

The logs can be used as a cheap fuel and will produce oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, which will also help in conserving forests.

Pruthi said this was the first of its kind experiment in Himachal, which aimed at curtailing the tendency of deserting animals in the district and to make gaushalas self-sustainable. Cow dung logs could be used as a means of earning and this experiment would prove effective in purifying the environment in the industrial areas of Sirmaur.

A log would cost Rs 5. These would be available for sale at Mata Balasundari Gaushala after a week. It will be used as fuel in all important industrial units, mortuaries and brick kilns.

The DC said machines for making earthen lamps, flower pots and incense sticks from cow dung would soon be installed.

Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry, Dr Neeru Shabnam said four logs could be made by using four-day-old 10-kg cow dung and one log would be about 2.5 feet long and 2.5 inches wide. She appealed to cattle owners not to abandon their animals, saying people could make money by selling several products made of cow dung and cow urine. — TNS
