Two of the jackals that escaped from their enclosure at the National Zoological Park on Saturday have been brought back to their holding area, zoo authorities said on Monday, while the search for the remaining one or two animals is still ongoing.

In an updated statement, the zoo said “two jackals are back to the holding area” and that an extensive search operation is continuing through staff patrols and CCTV monitoring.

Officials said trap cages and special squads have been deployed to locate the remaining jackals, which may be free-ranging outside the enclosure but still within the zoo’s forested zones.

The zoo added that there has been no sign or spotting of the animals in any visitor area, and visitor movement remains unaffected.

The staff continues to sweep the outer zones of the jackal enclosure and adjoining bushy patches, where the animals were last sighted, officials said.

The update comes a day after officials confirmed that three to four golden jackals had slipped out of their off-display holding area on Saturday, near the dense belt behind Azimganj Sarai in Beat No. 10. One jackal was secured early Sunday morning, and the second was guided back later, according to officials.

A tranquilisation team continues to be on standby, officials said, though they have not used any tranquilisers so far.

There is still no clarity on how the animals managed to leave the enclosure. The Joint Director of the zoo has been instructed to look into the matter and submit a detailed report.
