A 22-year-old youth, who was involved in several criminal cases, was shot dead in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area. The police suspect it be the fallout of a gang rivalry or an old enmity.

The youth, identified as Misbah, a resident of Jafrabad, was suspected to be a member of the infamous Hashim Baba gang.

The incident took place around 10:40 pm near Jama Masjid in Seelampur on Thursday. The police found the victim lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to Jag Pravesh Chand Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

DCP (Northeast) Ashish Mishra said after getting information, a Seelampur police team reached the spot and found the victim with multiple bullet injuries. “He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A forensic team was called to collect evidence. A case has been registered and further investigation is on,” the officer said.

The police recovered several empty cartridges from the crime scene and are analysing CCTV footage from the area to track down the shooters. According to local residents, Misbah had gone to Jama Masjid Chowk for coffee and was walking towards his car when unidentified assailants opened fire on him. Doctors reported finding over a dozen bullet injuries on his body.

Officials said Misbah had more than seven criminal cases against him, including those related to murder, attempted murder, robbery and illegal possession of arms.

Preliminary investigations point to the possibility of a gang war or personal vendetta as the motive behind the killing. Multiple police teams have been formed to identify and apprehend those involved.
