4 die in building collapse near Karol Bagh

Four persons died and 18 people were left injured after a two-storey building in Bapa Nagar area near Karol Bagh collapsed on Wednesday morning, police officials said.

Police said that around 9 am, information of a building collapse was received at Prasad Nagar police station.

“An old building in an area of approximately 25 sq yards has collapsed,” said M Harsha Vardhan, DCP Central.

The DCP said that the building was old and located in narrow lanes of a residential locality in Bapa Nagar of Prasad Nagar. Since the building was old and ill-maintained, it is suspected that recent rainfall and dilapidated condition of the building caused the mishap, however investigation is still underway.

“It was reported that a 5-storeyed building (G 4) had collapsed and people are trapped in the rubble. It was also found that the adjacent building has suffered damage,” said the DCP.

Rescue operations were initiated by the local police and other agencies like DFS and later NDRF was called to join the rescue operations. The rescue operation ended around 5:30 pm. Total 18 persons were rescued and shifted to hospitals. four of them have been declared dead in hospital, while two remain critical, 11 are under treatment and one person has been discharged after treatment.

The deceased were identified as Aman (12), Mukim (25), Mujib (18), Mosin (26). They are all natives of Khatanagar village, Rampur district,Uttar Pradesh. Mukim, Mujib and Mosin were engaged in making of ladies’ slippers. Aman had come to visit them and was not a resident of this building.

According Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official, a call reporting the collapse was received at 9.11 am following which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
