7 juveniles to be tried as adults for serious crimes in outer North Delhi
The Delhi Police have initiated legal proceedings to try seven juveniles as adults, officials said on Wednesday.
These individuals, aged between 16 and 18, have been implicated in offenses, including murder and attempt to murder.
According to the police, a total of 62 juveniles were identified for their involvement in such crimes across various police stations in the district. Following due legal process, applications were submitted to the court. It was determined that seven juveniles would be prosecuted as adults due to the severity of their offenses.
“This decision is a crucial step in reinforcing justice and ensuring that those involved in serious criminal activities face appropriate legal consequences, regardless of their age. Outer North District remains committed to safeguarding the community, deterring crime and upholding the rule of law,” said DCP (Outer North) Nidhin Valsan.
In Alipur, complainant Krishna, a resident of Nehru Enclave, was shot from behind while returning from Shani Bazaar on July 27, 2024. She suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, Narela. She had identified Sahabuddin and his sons as the suspects, leading to their eventual arrest. One juvenile in the case will be tried as an adult. A case was registered under Section 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the BNS and Section 27 of the Arms Act (use of arms).
In the second case, on January 8, 2025, an 18-year-old named Suraj Kumar reported that his friend Rahul was fatally attacked in Siraspur by three juveniles who threw a brick at Rahul’s bike, causing him to fall, and then assaulted him. One of the juveniles stabbed Rahul, who later succumbed to his injuries at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. The accused were subsequently arrested. A case was registered under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS.
In the third incident in the Narela Industrial Area, responding to a distress call on June 24, 2024, the police found a gunshot victim, Narender Tomar, at SRHC Hospital, Narela. The victim was left for treatment at a private hospital, but the efforts by the police led to the arrest of the accused. A case was registered under Sections 109 of the BNS and Section 27 of the Arms Act.
In the fourth incident at Bhalswa Dairy in November last year, complainant Mohd Sonu was attacked with a sharp object near 101 Bus Stand in Bhalswa Dairy by two juveniles. They were arrested in the incident and will be tried as an adult. A case was registered under Sections 118(1) (causing hurt with dangerous weapon), 126(2) (wrongful restraint) and 3(5) of the BNS.
The decision to try these juveniles as adults comes amid growing concerns about youth involvement in violent crimes. Under the Juvenile Justice Act, courts can allow juveniles aged 16-18 to be tried as adults if they are accused of heinous offenses.
