Admn tried to suppress case, did not inform police: Victim alleges in FIR

The victim, who was subjected to alleged sexual assault on the South Asian University (SAU) campus, alleged that the administration tried to suppress the case and did not inform the police. In the FIR, she alleged, “My friend insisted on Anupama mam, hostel in-charge, calling the police. But she told me to change clothes and take a bath and things will be alright.”

She claimed that the hostel in-charge was informed about the incident the same night, but it was not reported to the police.

According to the police, a PCR call regarding the incident was made by a friend of the victim.

However, the university, in its statement, said they were supporting the investigation. “The university is supporting the police and providing all information to them. We strongly condemn such incidents and hope that those responsible are apprehended. The university has formed a committee, and we are actively assisting the police in their investigation,” said OP Yadav, Public Relations Officer, South Asian University.

As per the university, the committee will submit a report within 10 working days. It will be headed by Professor Sanjay Chaturvedi as chairperson, Dr Ritu Gaur and Dr Kavita Khanna as members and Kalpana Ujjainwala as secretary.

Commission takes suo motu cognisance

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday took suo motu cognisance of a shocking media report titled “Delhi horror: South Asian University student sexually assaulted by security guard and his 3 friends” wherein a female student of South Asian University (SAU), Delhi, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a security guard, a staffer and two students inside the campus premises.

Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, seeking an immediate, impartial and sensitive investigation, protection of the survivor and stringent action against the accused.

The commission has also sought an action-taken report within three days, reiterating that women's safety within educational institutions is paramount and institutional accountability must be upheld at all levels.
