Army Chief honours sportspersons in Delhi

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, honoured Army sportspersons who participated in the recently concluded Paris Olympics during a ceremony held at South Block on Friday. General Dwivedi met the athletes and support staff to commend their efforts.

Subedar Major Neeraj Chopra, who won a silver medal in javelin after securing gold in Tokyo, and Subedar Dhiraj Bommadevara, who finished fourth in the mixed recurve archery competition alongside Bhajan Kaur, were among the standout Army athletes in Paris this year. Chopra was not present at the event as he is currently in Lausanne, Switzerland, preparing for the Diamond League competition.

Expressing pride in the achievements of the Army’s sportspersons, General Dwivedi conveyed his confidence that they would continue striving

for excellence.

“Their discipline, perseverance and dedication symbolise the core values of the Indian Army. Their accomplishments have not only earned accolades but have also inspired countless others to pursue excellence in sports,” General Dwivedi said.

He further highlighted the Army’s broader role in nation-building, saying, “The Indian Army stands as a pillar of strength, valour and discipline for the nation. Beyond its primary mission of defending our borders, the Army consistently demonstrates its commitment to various socio-cultural engagements, including sports, contributing holistically to nation-building. I am confident that our sportspersons will continue to excel and achieve even greater heights in the future.”
