With the Independence Day celebrations approaching, Bombay Suburban Electric Supply Limited (BSES) has issued a critical safety advisory urging Delhi residents to avoid using metal-coated ‘manjha’ for kite flying. The firm warns that the material, known for being a potent conductor of electricity, poses significant risks, including power outages and electrocution.

Every year, incidents involving this hazardous material lead to multiple power disruptions and damage to electrical infrastructure. “We urge residents to fly kites away from electrical installations and avoid using metal or metal-coated ‘manjha’. Following these guidelines will ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day for all,” said a BSES spokesperson.

The consequences of power disruptions caused by kite flying can be severe. According to BSES, tripping a single 33/66 KV overhead line can leave over 10,000 residents without power, while a single 11 KV line can impact more than 2,500 residents.

For emergencies, BSES has provided multiple contact options. Consumers can reach out via toll-free numbers at 19123 for BRPL or 19122 for BYPL. Additionally, they can use WhatsApp by sending ‘Hi’ to 8800919123 for BRPL or 8745999808 for BYPL.— TNS
