The police said four assailants opened fire on gangster Rohit Lamba in Najafgarh. During investigation, involvement of the Bhau gang was established. Four accused had already been arrested, while two key shooters, Ankit and Deepak, had been absconding, an official said.

Based on the interrogation of those arrested and human intelligence, the police identified Ankit and Deepak.

On Thursday morning, the Anti-Narcotics Cell in Dwarka received information that Ankit would be coming near Sai Baba Mandir in Najafgarh. A trap was laid near the UER-II bus stand. When Ankit arrived on a motorcycle around 8.05 am, the police team signalled him to stop.

Instead, Ankit opened fire at the police. One bullet struck the bulletproof jacket of Head Constable Kuldeep. In self-defence, Kuldeep fired two rounds. One of the bullets hit Ankit in the leg, the police official said.

He was shifted to a hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.
