Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsWith bypolls for 12 seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) likely to be announced next month, the BJP has begun early preparations to regain control of the majority of these constituencies. The party had previously held nine of the 12 seats.
According to party sources, internal meetings and reviews have already taken place under senior leadership. “BJP’s preparations have begun. All indoor meetings are done, and the entire organisation — from top to bottom — has become active. This time, the target is to win at least seven seats,” a source said.
To strengthen poll preparations, former and present councillors, senior MLAs, MPs and municipal officials have been roped in. The BJP is also assessing ground-level workers who have maintained strong public contact since the seats fell vacant, identifying potential candidates for the bypolls.
Among those leading the preparations are Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Leader of the House Pravesh Vahi, Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma and deputy chairperson Sundar Singh. The party is said to be focusing particularly on seats vacated by opposition councillors, highlighting local issues and lack of development.
In the 2022 civic polls, the BJP had initially won eight of these 12 wards. In Mundka, independent candidate Gajendra Daral — who later joined the BJP — secured victory by a margin of 9,348 votes, prompting the party to field him as its candidate in the 2025 Assembly elections.
