The Delhi BJP on Tuesday criticised the AAP government’s tall claims of providing world-class education, following a visit to a school under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in Kapashera, where hundreds of students are forced to study sitting on jute mats.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva along with other party leaders exposed the dire state of the school, highlighting it as an evidence of the failure of Arvind Kejriwal’s much-touted education model.
“The Delhi government boasts about its world-class education model, but the reality on the ground is starkly different,” said Sachdeva. “Hundreds of children in this school are being forced to sit on jute mats, with no desks, no proper classrooms and no adequate teaching staff. This is an appalling situation and exposes the real condition of government schools under the Kejriwal administration,” he added.
During the visit, the BJP leaders noted several alarming issues at the school, including the lack of basic facilities such as drinking water, proper toilets and sufficient teaching staff. “The school has 1,250 students, yet there is no water cooler, no functioning taps and the toilets are filthy,” Sachdeva pointed out.
“Moreover, there is no separate toilet block for approximately 550 female students and the classrooms don’t even have proper blackboards,” the leader said.
Sachdeva also highlighted the absence of a principal since 2022 and the shortage of teachers, with many on long leave or deputed to other duties. “This isn’t just about one school; similar conditions can be found in government schools across Delhi. The government’s neglect is evident, and we will be taking this matter to the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to ensure immediate action is taken,” he added.
Bidhuri echoed Sachdeva’s concerns, questioning the credibility of AAP’s claims. “We have seen children here sitting on the ground, with no desks in unhygienic conditions. Where is the educational revolution that leaders like Atishi, Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal keep talking about?” Bidhuri asked. “We will also bring this issue to the attention of the Mayor of Delhi to ensure that necessary improvements are made for the future of these children.”
Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Municipal Corporation, Raja Iqbal Singh, accused the Kejriwal government of misleading Delhiites about the state of primary education. “Despite being in power in the MCD, the Kejriwal government continues to neglect schools, health and sanitation. We will demand desks and other basic facilities for the Kapashera school,” he said.
Delhi BJP’s media head Praveen Shankar Kapoor added that the party will continue to expose the failures of the AAP government. “Last week, we revealed the poor condition of Kasturba Hospital, and today we’ve exposed the truth behind the so-called world-class schools.”
