With the beginning of the Navratri festivities on Monday, calls for a ban on meat sales during the nine-day festival are gaining traction in the Capital.

Two BJP legislators - Jangpura MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Shakur Basti MLA Karnail Singh - wrote to the authorities concerned requesting them and food chains to suspend the sale of non-vegetarian items during the period.

In his letter, Marwah requested that meat shops should remain closed from September 22 to October 1, saying the festival is closely linked to people’s faith.

He also announced plans to visit markets in Jangpura to appeal to restaurant and shop owners to halt the preparation and sale of meat dishes.

Karnail Singh addressed a similar appeal to major food chains, urging them not to serve meat-based meals during Navratri. “I spoke to a few stores and wrote letters. I will meet them again,” he added.

This is not the first time such a demand has surfaced in Delhi. Earlier, Marwah had sought the closure of meat shops during the Kanwar Yatra and was seen on the ground urging vendors to shut liquor and meat shops during the religious procession.
