BJP MP Swaraj raises concerns over parking issues in Delhi

BJP Lok Sabha MP from New Delhi Bansuri Swaraj raised concerns in Parliament over the worsening parking issues in the Capital, particularly in market areas. Swaraj questioned the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs about the government’s efforts to address the parking crisis and the potential construction of multi-level parking structures in the Capital.

Swaraj’s inquiry included three key questions — whether the government had acknowledged the parking problem, if any study had been conducted to assess the issue’s magnitude, and whether there were plans to construct multi-level parking facilities to ease the situation.

Responding to the question, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said parking facilities in Delhi, including those in market areas, were managed by respective urban local bodies and the Delhi Government. He noted that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) periodically conducts surveys to identify new sites for surface parking and assesses the need for multi-level parking to address the growing demand.

Sahu provided a breakdown of the existing and in-progress multi-level parking projects across the city. According to the minister, the MCD has 27 operational multi-level parking facilities, with two more under construction. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) currently has two operational multi-level parking structures, but no projects are in progress. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has two multi-level parking projects under development, with none currently operational, while the Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB) has neither operational nor planned multi-level parking facilities.

Swaraj’s query highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Delhi residents, especially in bustling market areas, where inadequate parking often leads to congestion and traffic woes.
