Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced a new scheme to support cow shelters, aiming to address the growing issue of stray cattle on the city’s roads.

The scheme will include a comprehensive survey of existing shelters and provide financial aid to ensure their smooth operation.

CM Gupta made the announcement during a public event at Gramin Gaushala in Bawana, where she emphasised the importance of caring for cows, referring to them as “Gau Mata”.

“It pains us to see cows wandering on the roads, sometimes leading to accidents. The problem arises when people allow their cows to roam around after milking them,” Gupta said, stressing the need for responsible cattle ownership.

She urged cattle owners to house their cows at designated locations, such as Ghoga Dairy, about 50 kilometers from central Delhi, as cows are not allowed within the city limits.

Gupta highlighted that the government, alongside philanthropists, is committed to providing fodder and shelter for the animals.

“It is our duty to care for the old and sick cows abandoned on the roads, and we will ensure that they are properly looked after,” she added.

The announcement comes just weeks after the BJP government introduced a proposal in the budget for a new law to protect stray cows in Delhi.

The law would include strict regulations to prevent cow exploitation, curb illegal cattle trade and hold owners accountable for neglect.

BJP MLAs have long raised concerns over the dangers posed by stray cows, including traffic congestion, sanitation issues and frequent accidents. According to Model Town MLA Ashok Goel, the police received 25,393 complaints regarding stray cows between January 1 and February 19 this year.
