The Delhi unit of Congress has criticised Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the BJP leadership over the low public turnout at the inauguration of the Urban Extension Road (UER) on Sunday, alleging it exposed the ruling party’s “false claims of development”.

Senior Congress spokesperson Naresh Kumar claimed the BJP was compelled to rely on government employees to fill the venue, as neither the general public nor BJP workers attended the event. “Within just six months, the failures of the BJP government have become visible to the people,” he said.

He said schoolteachers, sanitation workers and other government staff were made to attend the ceremony under official orders, with attendance marked as mandatory. “The party which is considered organisationally the strongest failed to connect with the people and had to depend on government employees. Despite the BJP having the highest number of MPs and MLAs, if they still need to gather government staff instead of people and party workers, it reflects a major failure and a shameful truth of the BJP government,” said Dr Kumar.

The Congress leader also pointed to what he described as a lack of coordination between Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her ministers, which, he said, was evident during the inauguration ceremony. He accused the BJP of continuing to celebrate its electoral win even after six months in power, instead of addressing the concerns of the people and reiterated the government had failed to deliver on promises made to Delhiites.
