During investigation, the police arrested Kurshid, 49, a native of Radhakantapur village in Nadia district, West Bengal. Kurshid, a tenant on the property, had allegedly accommodated multiple families at the plot and stored scrap materials there.
The land owner, Rajbir Bhati, a resident of Hari Nagar village in Jaitpur, is absconding. Efforts are on to trace and apprehend him, the police said.
The incident took place on August 9 in Hari Nagar, Jaitpur, where a boundary wall adjoining a scrap storage area gave way, trapping several people beneath the debris. Seven persons — three men, two women and two children — succumbed to their injuries, while one person is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.
The police said a case under Sections 106, 125 and 290 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at the Jaitpur police station. The bodies were handed over to the family members after the post-mortem examination.
