Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsThe Delhi Government has announced a special financial assistance scheme for persons with disabilities requiring high support, under which eligible beneficiaries would receive Rs 6,000 per month.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative aims to ensure dignity and security for persons with disabilities and their families.
Approved earlier by the Delhi Cabinet, the scheme would be formally inaugurated tomorrow by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The financial support would be directly transferred to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of beneficiaries and can be used to cover the cost of caregivers, therapies, counselling, assistive devices and other essential services.
According to the Chief Minister, individuals with at least 40 per cent disability who are certified as having “High Support Needs” — with a score between 60 and 100 by the District-level Assessment Board — would be eligible for the scheme. Applicants must also be residents of Delhi for at least five years, have a family income below Rs 1 lakh annually, and complete Aadhaar-linked verification.
Registrations and applications would be processed online through the government’s e-District portal.
Calling the move a “historic decision” for one of the most vulnerable sections of society, Gupta said, “This initiative of our government is dedicated to persons with disabilities. We aim to ensure they receive the necessary support and resources to meet their essential needs.”
