Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly inaugurated the redeveloped Sadbhavana Park here on Tuesday. The sprawling 11-acre park is located parallel to the Walled City on Mahatma Gandhi Marg (Ring Road).

The park, envisioned and personally supervised by LG Saxena, is the second in a series of three landscape projects undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to rejuvenate the Capital’s green belts. The inauguration ceremony also saw the presence of Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal, Delhi Chief Secretary and senior DDA officials.

With formal lawns, white marble pathways, shaded eating plazas, baradaris, sculpture fountains and open recreational zones, Sadbhavana Park has been crafted to offer both aesthetic and functional public space — particularly benefitting residents of Old Delhi and Daryaganj.

One of the park’s centrepieces is a striking sculpture of five white horses being led by a sarathi, encircled by a water pond and fountains. Enhancing the cultural richness of the space, four Yakshini sculptures by Padma Vibhushan awardee sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo have also been installed in the linear lawns.

A clock tower, currently under construction, is expected to add further charm to the park. Plans for a food van near the parking area aim to provide visitors with refreshment options and elevate their overall experience.

To mark the inauguration, L-G Saxena and CM Rekha Gupta planted a moulsari tree in the central baradari, while other officials planted “Pride of India” saplings along the main pathways. White balloons were released into the sky, symbolising the spirit of Sadbhavana (harmony).

Speaking at the event, L-G Saxena recalled the dismal condition of the area behind the Red Fort in previous years. “This was once a neglected, dirty space where illegal activities thrived. Raj Ghat, a nationally significant site, is located here. After requesting the Central Government, the land was handed over from the PWD to the DDA, and a proper development plan was launched,” he said.

CM Rekha said: “A positive phase has begun for Delhi. All levels of government — Centre, state and municipal — are now working in sync to build a Viksit Delhi, a clean and beautiful Delhi. Wherever the Centre can help, it is doing so wholeheartedly. The Delhi Government is working round the clock in its areas of responsibility.”

Sadbhavana Park is the second in a trilogy of landscape parks being developed along Mahatma Gandhi Road, following the inauguration of Kranti Udyan in January this year. The full scheme spans 1.7 km along the Ring Road, covering 35 acres of rejuvenated green area.
