Singh, who is currently serving as the Director General of Home Guards, has been given an additional charge as the Delhi Police Commissioner, effective from August 1, until further orders, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday.
On his arrival at the Delhi Police Headquarters on Jai Singh road, Singh was given a Guard of Honour.
He was handed over the charge by outgoing Commissioner of Police Sanjay Arora at his office in the Police Headquarters.
This development follows Arora’s retirement. He stepped down today upon superannuation at the age of 60, marking the end of his three-year tenure.
A ceremonial farewell parade was organised in his honour at the Kingsway Camp Parade Ground.
This is the first time since July 2021 that an officer from the AGMUT cadre has been appointed to head the Delhi Police — even if on an interim basis. Notably, Sanjay Arora belonged to the Tamil Nadu cadre, while his predecessor Rakesh Asthana was from the Gujarat cadre.
Singh, the youngest IPS officer of the 1988 batch, currently serves as the Director General of Home Guards, Delhi, a post he assumed in June 2022, where he has been overseeing volunteer forces and civil defence operations in the national capital.
He has also served as DGP of Mizoram and DGP of Arunachal Pradesh as well.
Moreover, he also held multiple senior roles in Delhi Police, including Special CP (Technology & Project Implementation), Special CP (Law & Order), Additional CP (EOW), Joint CP (Crime), among others.
