Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsIn a major relief for traders ahead of Diwali, the Delhi Government has disbursed Rs 694 crore in GST refunds this financial year, marking a record achievement in refund processing. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said her government had accelerated the settlement of pending claims to ensure traders receive timely financial support during the festive season.
The Chief Minister said the move reflects her government’s commitment to promoting ease of doing business and empowering traders across the Capital.
“Promoting ease of doing business is our commitment. The easier it becomes for traders in the Capital to conduct business, the faster we can realise the dream of a ‘Viksit Delhi’,” she said.
According to official data, the Department of Trade and Taxes has resolved 7,375 refund applications so far in FY 2025-26, transferring Rs 694 crore to traders’ accounts. Of this, Rs 227 crore was released in September alone, the highest monthly figure in Delhi’s refund history.
Chief Minister Gupta credited the introduction of advanced digital tools for the faster processing. Developed in collaboration with the IIT-Hyderabad, the new IT module uses data analytics, automation and rapid verification mechanisms to simplify refund settlements and reduce delays.
“The previous government failed to take the issue of GST refunds seriously, creating a backlog that caused immense stress to traders. We’ve treated the issue with urgency. By Diwali, we aim to ensure that substantial refund amounts reach the business community, strengthening their faith in the government,” she said.
The Chief Minister also announced that redevelopment plans for major markets are underway, alongside the establishment of the Delhi Vyapari Kalyan Board to address traders’ concerns and facilitate smoother business operations.
Gupta said timely refunds help ensure adequate liquidity, reduce litigation burdens and encourage entrepreneurship and confidence among traders and MSMEs. “Our government’s goal is to strengthen ease of doing business for traders by simplifying regulations and removing unnecessary hurdles,” she said.
