Athletes representing Delhi University (DU) at inter-college and national tournaments say they continue to face academic setbacks and institutional neglect despite bringing laurels to their colleges. Many student players allege that the university lacks a proper mechanism to accommodate their attendance and examination schedules, leaving them to struggle with back papers and mounting academic stress.

“Whenever we go for tournaments, our attendance drops drastically. Even though we represent the University, we are marked absent in classes and face problems during internal assessments,” said a student athlete from North Campus, requesting anonymity.

Another student shared that missing exams during tournaments often forces them to repeat semesters. “We have to choose between playing for the college and clearing our exams. It feels unfair that our achievements are not valued as much as academics,” the student said.

Beyond attendance issues, athletes have also raised concerns about inadequate sports facilities in several DU colleges. From outdated gym equipment to ill-maintained grounds, students claim the sports infrastructure receives minimal attention. “We train with limited resources and often buy our own kits or borrow equipment from others,” said a sportsperson from South Campus.

Student unions have echoed these concerns in a recent memorandum to the University administration. They have demanded that colleges provide basic sports facilities and equipment, ensure regular maintenance and upgradation of infrastructure, including grounds, gyms and indoor halls, and introduce medical and nutritional support for sports students.

Responding to the complaints, Anil Kumar Kalkal, Director of Sports, University of Delhi, said, “It is up to individual colleges to conduct sports activities and manage infrastructure. The University provides all necessary facilities to students representing DU, but college-level management remains the colleges’ responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Aryan Maan, who is also a football player, assured support for the athletes. “As a footballer myself, I understand how passionate students are about sports. As DUSU president, I am closely looking into the issues faced by student athletes and will work to ensure they receive better facilities and all their concerns are addressed,” he said.

While DU athletes continue to win recognition and medals, many hope their voices will finally be heard and the University will take stronger steps to support the students who bring it pride on the field.
