The familiar sight of University Special (U-Special) buses has made a comeback at Delhi University, this time with a sustainable twist. On Thursday, 25 new electric buses were flagged off from the DU Sports Complex, reviving a service that once played a central role in student life across the Capital.

First launched in 1971, the U-Specials were more than just a means of transport — they were moving snapshots of campus culture, carrying laughter, debates, friendships and memories across the University’s North and South Campuses. Over the decades, they connected colleges, hostels and neighbourhoods, becoming an iconic part of DU’s identity. However, financial constraints and administrative lapses gradually led to their decline and by 2013-14, the vibrant fleet had vanished.

“U-Special buses are a very good move for students as well as for the university. When students travel together, it helps in developing the university’s culture and builds strong bonds and familiarity among them,” said DU Public Relations Officer (PRO) Anoop Lather, welcoming the initiative.

Now returning in an electric, air-conditioned form, the new U-Specials are fitted with modern features such as CCTV cameras, panic buttons, digital QR codes and even music systems. Designed with safety and comfort in mind, the buses would operate on more than 25 routes, connecting DU with JNU, IIT Delhi and over 65 other educational institutions.

“It feels amazing to finally have the U-Special buses back. Commuting will be so much easier, and it saves us a lot of time every day,” said Rohan Sharma, a second-year student at Ramjas College, boarding one of the new buses with a smile.

For many students, the revival carries emotional resonance. “I’ve heard so many stories from seniors about these buses. Experiencing them myself feels special, comfortable and eco-friendly. This really makes campus life better,” said Deepak Jha,

another student.

From once serving as a lifeline for DU students to now returning as green, student-friendly rides, the U-Special buses appear set to reclaim their place at the heart of campus life — easing travel while reviving a shared culture that many students are excited to call their own once again.
