In a heart-wrenching incident in the Hauz Qazi area, Central Delhi, on Tuesday night, a woman died and her friend-cum-neighbour sustained serious injuries after accidentally falling from the terrace of a three-storey building, the police said on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sunita (21), while her friend Tripti (19), also known as Gungun, is battling for her life in the hospital, they added. The women were reportedly taking a walk on the terrace when the tragic incident took place.

According to the police, they received a call around 10 pm. The caller reported that “two girls had jumped from the terrace a three-storey building in the Hauz Qazi area.”

When a team from the Hauz Qazi police station reached the spot, they found Sunita lying motionless on the ground with fatal head injuries.

Tripti had already been taken to a nearby hospital by her family members before the police arrived.

Initial investigations revealed that the women were close friends and neighbours. They were often seen spending time together on the terrace after dinner.

“Shortly before the incident, I told my sister to come downstairs as it was getting late,” said Tripti’s brother.

“Minutes later, we heard a loud thud. When we rushed out, Sunita and Tripti were found lying on the ground,” he said.

Family members suspect no foul play in the incident. “It seems Sunita may have slipped and Tripti tried to grab her hand to save her, but lost her balance too,” said a cousin of one of the girls.

“Prima facie, it appears to be an accidental fall. There are no signs of foul play, harassment or suicide. The exact cause of the fall will be known after the post-mortem report and Tripti’s statement,” an officer said.

Sunita was married in February 2025 but had been living with her parents for the past few months for treatment of partial paralysis.
