Gang leader wanted for doc’s murder killed in encounter

A rewarded criminal, who was wanted for the murder of a doctor in Jangpura, Southeast Delhi, and several dacoities in parts of National Capital Region (NCR), was shot dead by a team of the Crime Branch Gurugram and the Delhi Police during an encounter.

The accused, identified as Bheem Jora (39), was the leader of a gang. A resident of Nepal, he used to employ his gang members as domestic help in affluent families. The gang members used to give sleep-inducing tablets to family members before committing burglary, dacoity and murder, the police said.

Acting on a tip-off about Jora’s presence in the area, the police laid a trap at the DDA Astha Kunj Park in Southeast Delhi. When the police asked him to surrender, Jora opened fire at them. Bullets hit the bulletproof jackets of Inspector Narender Sharma and Sub-Inspector Shubham Chaudhary.

The police fired gunshots in self-defence. The accused, who suffered gunshot injuries, was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where he succumbed to his injuries, the cop added.

Notably in May 2024, Jora and his gang member, who was employed as a servant at the house of Dr Yogesh Chandar Paul in Jangpura, Southeast Delhi, brutally killed the doctor during the robbery.

During investigation, it was found that a domestic help, Basanti, was behind the theft and murder. The police had arrested Basanti in this regard, but Jora was on the run since then.

Since 2014, the accused, along with his team members, was involved in five other cases in major cities namely Surat, Bangalore, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Delhi wherein he had committed murder, dacoity and burglary with similar modus operandi.

Jora got his gang members employed in well-off families by befooling placement agencies. The accused used to run away to Nepal after committing crimes, the cop mentioned.
