The Delhi Government on Friday declared November 7 as a public holiday on Chhath Puja. The decision came after Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena wrote a letter to Chief Minister Atishi for declaring November 7 as a public holiday. An hour later, Atishi, in a post on X, said, “I am happy to inform you that the Delhi Government has decided that there will be a holiday on November 7 for Chhath, so that all brothers and sisters of Purvanchal can celebrate the festival with pomp and show.”

With Assembly elections approaching in February, both the L-G and the AAP are eager to claim credit for the decision, aiming to appeal to Purvanchali voters in the Capital.

“In a few days we will be celebrating Chhath. The four-day festival in which the third day is an auspicious day where devotees offer prayers to setting Sun God is the most important,” the L-G said in a letter.

“This day, which falls on November 7 this year, has already been declared as a restricted holiday. I request the government to declare November 7 as a full-time holiday and the related file should be sent as soon as possible,” the letter added.

Meanwhile, Atishi, in an order, said Chhath Pooja is an important festival for the people of NCT of Delhi.
