Govt fully prepared to handle the situation, depts on high alert: Delhi CM

With the Yamuna’s water level expected to rise following heavy discharge from the Hathni Kund Barrage, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday assured city residents that the government is fully prepared to deal with any flood-like situation.

The Chief Minister said all flood-related departments are on high alert and round-the-clock monitoring is on. “Large-scale desilting of the Yamuna and its drains over the past six months has significantly strengthened our flood defences. All barrage gates have been opened to ensure smooth flow of water, preventing any stagnation. Water is flowing out as swiftly as it enters,” she said.

Gupta clarified that water reaching the Yamuna floodplain is a natural occurrence and part of the river’s ecological system. “There is no risk of flooding in the outer areas. Citizens need not panic. The government is committed to ensuing their safety. Hourly updates are being provided on the situation,” she added.

According to the government’s assessment, the water level in the Yamuna may touch 207 metres or slightly higher, but officials maintain that the situation remains under control. The Chief Minister stressed that any flood-related issue will be addressed promptly, with public safety being the government’s top priority.

Gupta urged people residing along the Yamuna riverbed to remain cautious and strictly follow instructions issued by the administration.
