Govt reduced Assembly to a formality: LoP
He criticised the government for excluding Question Hour, Short Duration Discussion, and Calling Attention Motion from the agenda. “These are fundamental tools for legislative accountability, yet the government chose to exclude them, showcasing its lack of preparedness and disregard for democratic norms,” Gupta remarked.
Gupta also alleged that the government failed to present the 14 pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, despite repeated demands from the Opposition. On the issue of revised budget estimates, Gupta accused the government of deliberate delays. “The government sent its revised budget estimates to the Ministry of Home Affairs for approval, leading to the adjournment of the December 2 session. If approval was needed, why weren’t these estimates sent earlier? This clearly shows the session was a mere formality,” he stated.
Gupta also condemned the government for abolishing provisions to ask questions under Rule 280. “This is an attempt to suppress opposition voices and avoid accountability,” he said.
