Guru Teg Bahadur’s martyrdom anniv: Sarna urges Centre, states to grant parole to Bandi Singhs

The chief of the Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Paramjit Singh Sarna, has urged the Centre and state governments to release Bandi Singhs on parole for a month so they may join the community in commemorating the 350th anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur martyrdom.

In a statement issued in Delhi, Sarna said the occasion marked one of the most sacred milestones in world history, and the participation of Bandi Singhs, who have long awaited justice and clemency, would carry profound emotional and spiritual significance for the Panth.

Sarna said: “Allowing Bandi Singhs to take part in the commemorations would not only honour that legacy but also serve as a gesture of compassion and humanity in keeping with Guru Sahib’s teachings.”

He appealed to the Union Home Ministry and to state governments — particularly Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi — to facilitate the month-long parole in coordination with prison authorities and the SGPC.

Sarna added that such a step would reaffirm the spirit of reconciliation and justice that lies at the heart of Sikh belief. “This anniversary is not just about remembrance but renewal. It is an opportunity for the state to show faith in the values of mercy and dignity that Guru Sahib upheld through his martyrdom at Chandni Chowk,” he said.
