Gurugram reduced to ‘Guru-jam’ due to BJP’s mismanagement: Deepender Hooda

Congress MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday accused the BJP government in Haryana and at the Centre of presiding over the “collapse of basic infrastructure” in Gurugram. He alleged that the city, once touted as a millennium hub, has now been reduced to “Guru-jam” and a “sinking city”.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Hooda said that during the Parliament’s Monsoon Session on August 7, he had asked Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar about the state of Gurugram’s roads, garbage management, and waterlogging. “His reply was that no citizens face problems related to infrastructure. He even said the question was wrong, claiming everything is fine in Gurgaon. But today, the reality is out before the nation,” Hooda said.

The Congress leader alleged that more than Rs 2,000 crore had been allocated since 2016 for drainage works in Gurugram, but the projects never materialised. “Every year, a call centre is set up during rains for Rs 1.5 crore, but it serves no purpose. Drains were never built, and the money disappeared,” he said.

Hooda contrasted this with the Congress government’s record, citing the introduction of Rapid Metro, eight-lane roads, ESI Medical College, Defence University, and the expansion of IMT Manesar. “The Dwarka Expressway was 60 per cent complete in our time, but they took 11 years to finish the rest. In their tenure, not a single metro pillar has been added,” he said.

He further claimed that Gurugram’s hospital and bus stand are in disrepair, and residents have been left without basic civic facilities. “During the last rains, eight people died due to drowning and electrocution. The public drowns in water, while the government drowns in corruption,” Hooda said.

Extending his criticism to the state at large, Hooda said farmers across Haryana were facing losses every year due to waterlogging. “In 11 years, not a single new drain has been constructed in the state. Lakhs of farmers have lost their crops. The government shuts its doors instead of stepping on the ground and compensating those affected,” he added.
