A man was killed while another suffered injuries after a speeding Mahindra Thar hit them near the 11 Murti landmark on the Mother Teresa Road here early on Sunday.

The police said the accident took place around 6.30 am when the SUV, which was coming from Dhaula Kuan and going towards India Gate, veered onto the footpath and hit the two men, dragging them for several metres before coming to a halt.

“The driver has been identified as Ashish, a resident of Shakarpur in East Delhi. The car belongs to his friend Ankit from Ghaziabad,” a police officer said.

A liquor bottle was found inside the vehicle. It has been sent for forensic examination to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Recounted the moments, an eyewitness said: “The SUV, which was being driven at a fast speed, skidded before coming to a halt with a loud crash.”

The victims were shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where one of them was declared dead on arival. The injured person is undergoing treatment. The police seized the vehicle and detained the driver. They are scanning CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events.
