Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) will launch a new undergraduate engineering programme — BTech in Metrology — from the next academic session, becoming the first university in the country, outside the IITs, to offer this specialised course. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor and Padma Shri awardee Prof Mahesh Verma during the Teachers’ Day programme. “The University plans to sign an MoU with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and launch a BTech programme in Metrology from the next academic session,” he said. He also emphasised that metrology formed the backbone of basic engineering and was crucial for industrial growth and innovation. At present, the course was available at only two or three IITs. With its introduction at GGSIPU, the university aims to give students an opportunity to pursue a highly specialised field that blends India’s ancient knowledge systems with modern engineering, a university official said. The chief guest, Prof Venu Gopal Achanta, Director of NPL, highlighted the timeless relevance of measurement science. “Drawing from India’s ancient knowledge systems of weights and measures in the Mauryan period, we can connect them to the 2019 redefinition of international units of measurement, underscoring the enduring importance of ‘metrology’,” he said. The initiative is expected to strengthen GGSIPU’s collaborations with premier research institutions such as the National Physical Laboratory and open new avenues for students in science and technology.
