As the doctors’ strike entered its seventh day on Sunday in the Capital, Asha Devi, mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gangrape case, called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of “failing” to manage the situation following widespread protests over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

She criticised Mamata for “trying to divert people’s attention” by leading protests rather than taking decisive action.

“Instead of using her authority to act against the culprits, Mamata is trying to mislead the public,” Asha Devi stated.

“As a woman and the head of the state, she should have taken strict action against the culprits. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation,” she added.

Asha Devi also emphasised that until both central and state governments prioritise swift punishment for rapists, such brutal incidents will continue to occur across the country. “When girls are not safe in Kolkata’s medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, it reflects the dire state of women’s safety in the country,” she said.

Amid nationwide protests, the Centre has directed all states to submit law and order reports every two hours. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) instructed state police forces to send these reports via email, fax, or WhatsApp.
