Hundreds of animal rights activists from across India gathered at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, urging the government to grant animals ‘legal personhood’ status and put an end to their abuse and exploitation.

Organised by the Delhi Vegans for Animal Liberation, the protest emphasised the need to view animals as individuals rather than resources and demanded public support in ceasing animal exploitation.

Raising slogans, activists detailed how animals are subjected to cruelty in various industries, from artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes to practices like debeaking and crushing of day-old male chicks in poultry farms. “It’s high time we recognise that animals have the right to live freely, without harm,” said Indraneel Das,

an organiser.
