Delhi Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena today approved the translocation and transplantation of 252 trees and 15 trees, respectively, which will be cut for constructing proposed academic buildings on the North Campus of Delhi University.

Officials said the university would plant 2,670 saplings in lieu of these 267 trees. The compensatory plantation would cost Rs 1,57,89,000, which the university would deposit in advance, they said.

An official said, “The 4.8834-hectare area would be utilised for the construction of an inter-disciplinary academic and research building inside the Schools of Economics, academic building for Faculty of Technology, library building that will expand the existing Central Reference Library and an integrated computer centre. The Centre will bear the project cost of of over Rs 900 crore.”

The officials said that officials of the Forest Department and DU conducted a joint inspection of the site. They added the L-G was also informed that the site for the project was not falling in a Morphological Ridge Area and under the definition of deemed forest.

DU would plant an additional 100 saplings of neem, amaltas, peepal, pilkhan, gular, bargad, desikikar and Arjun in 24,120 sqm area, said officials at Raj Niwas.
