A six-year-old boy suffered grievous injuries, including the loss of his right ear, after being mauled by a dog in northwest Delhi’s Prem Nagar, an official said on Monday.

The dog was a pitbull and belonged to Rajesh Pal, a 50-year-old tailor, who has since been arrested.

According to the police, the child was playing outside his home in Vinay Enclave on Sunday evening when the dog suddenly emerged from a neighbour’s house and attacked him. The dog had been brought home around one-and-a-half years ago by Pal’s son, Sachin, who is currently in jail in an attempt-to-murder case.

A PCR call alerting police about the incident was received at 5.38 pm, stating that the injured child had been rushed to the hospital by his parents.

Neighbours helped rescue the boy, who was first taken to BSA Hospital in Rohini and later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police have collected medical records and recorded the statement of the child’s father, Dinesh, a factory worker in Kirti Nagar.

Based on the complaint and medical findings, a case has been registered at Prem Nagar police station.
