MCD House session turns chaotic as BJP, AAP, Congress councillors during special budget session

A special session of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), convened on Wednesday to finalise the budget for 2024-25 and 2025-26, descended into chaos as councillors from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Congress clashed, leading to heated exchanges, torn documents, and disruptions.

The session, scheduled for 2 pm, began late, with Mayor Mahesh Kumar arriving at 2:55 pm. As he entered the hall, Congress councillors unfurled a banner reading “Humara Samvidhan Humari Pehchan, Samvidhan Ki Hatya Band Karo. Sharm Karo, Sharm Karo,” protesting alleged constitutional violations. This triggered an immediate reaction from BJP councillors, who countered with slogans such as “Aam Aadmi Party Chor Hai, Aam Aadmi Party Murdabad,” leading to further disruptions.

As tensions escalated, some councillors climbed onto tables, tore up the day’s agenda, and attempted to snatch microphones. Despite the ruckus, Mayor Mahesh Kumar instructed Leader of the House Mukesh Goel to proceed with the budget presentation. However, BJP councillors grabbed the mayor’s mic in protest, while others wrestled with AAP members, causing some to fall from the tables. AAP councillors retaliated with chants of “BJP Murdabad, BJP Haye Haye.”

Ironically, just minutes before the session, former Mayor Shelly Oberoi, Mayor Mahesh Kumar, and Leader of Opposition Raja Iqbal were seen sharing a meal at the same table.

The disruption ultimately forced the mayor to adjourn the session for 10 minutes.
