The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will conduct elections on June 2 to fill two vacant seats in its Standing Committee, one of the most influential decision-making bodies of the civic agency.

The seats fell vacant after two councillors resigned earlier this year upon being elected as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in February.

The councillors represented Ward No. 164 and Ward No. 74 and were members of the Standing Committee from the South Zone Wards Committee and the City-SP Zone Wards Committee, respectively.

Initially scheduled for May 22, the elections had to be postponed due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. On Monday, the MCD announced the new date for the polls, which will be conducted through a secret ballot.

According to officials, the election for the City-SP Zone Wards Committee will take place at 10 am at the Hansraj Gupta Auditorium, while the South Zone Wards Committee will hold its poll at 12 noon at the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium in the Civic Centre.

The Standing Committee plays a critical role in the MCD’s functioning, with authority over financial approvals, budget planning and major policy decisions.

As per Sub-section (5) of Section 45 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957, any vacancy in the committee is to be filled by the respective wards committees through an internal election among their councillor members.
